Hold your breath; we’re under attack. No, they’re not robots or aliens. They’re birds. Giant birds. Giant paper birds to be specific. All this should point to Sipho Mabona, the mastermind behind this installation in the great hall of Tropenmuseum. The origami birds flock the ceiling in a larger-than-life way, and don’t be surprised. Mabona has mastered the art of Japanese paper folding and he does them big time.

By big time, we meant having Mabona folding the entire bird flock out of 2.7 – 5.4 meter paper sheets. You can see the wings spanning out from 2 to 4 meters. Now that’s a lot of work, and a lot of hands to fold such gargantuan origami sculptures.

The installation is called Giga Origami and is assumed to grow in number during this Summer. Watch the collection blossom; by August 31st, there might be no space inside because there’s too much of them!

Mabona said that this project centers on “crowdfolding.” What pun!
