Known for his hyperrealistic works, artist Randall Rosenthal ventures on recreating a single block of wood into an entirely different object. A surrealist painter, Rosenthal brings his sculpture to life by his attention to detail, color and realism. The result, a stunning pile of magazines which seems to be left over by an owner who had the leisure of drinking his coffee and putting it atop his crossword puzzle. And it all looks too real that no one will ever think it’s created out of one chipped block.
Rosenthal discloses that he is greatly inspired by Pollock and Van Gogh. He gained his BFA from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. In this project, he chips away the block until the form is sculpted. This includes the folded leaves of the magazines along with the edges. After the carving is done, he paints the sculpture into a realistic bunch of prints which can only make one wonder whether it is real or not.
Of course, you will find out once you pick it up; paper cannot weigh this heavy!
