This must be a joke, but no, it is true! This life size elephant origami (take note, it’s origami–the Japanese art of paper-folding–and not Papier Mâché) is made out of one sheet of paper. It’s the work of a professional origami artist Sipho Mabona, and is notably his most ambitious work, that is, if he is not up to something more challenging. He and his team of more than a dozen people took over four months to complete this massive paper sculpture.
Mabona’s paper elephant origami stands over 3 meters tall and is featured in the KKLB Museum in Beromünster, Switzerland. The artist first launched the project in Indiegogo where he gathered $26,000 from 631 supporters. As he takes on the project, a webcam was installed in the area which allowed the audience to see how this paper elephant take shape.
Of course, Mabona encountered many difficulties in shaping and bending the paper in creating the elephant. Problems like how to spread the whole sheet of 15×15 meter of paper in the hall and transforming it into the elephant’s body really took most of the time. And because of the size, there were instances where he required ten people to help him lift up and fold the paper.
It’s about time origami artists take the spotlight, and who wouldn’t earn some credit after doing something as ambitious as this?
