The then-design-student Jón Helgi Hólmgeirsson has created Jonofon, an acoustic gramophone that utilizes paper to amplify music played from a vinyl record. Stripping down the technology hidden to common eyes, he copies the design of the classic record player but replaces the heavy materials with lighter objects.
Holmgeirs says that Jonofon is a “return to simplcity” as modern technology continues to get complicated and “it’s not made for the average Joe to understand.”
The DIY kit comes in a flat pack, in which the user is suggested to study how the player functions by assembling the gramophone from scratch. Of course, the product comes with a manual.
Jonofon is Hólmgeirsson’s graduation project for his Iceland Academy of the Arts course. The project is named after him.
