Light and shadow are two important elements which affects the things we see. The depth of an object tells if it is near or far, as well as if it is big or small. With these two factors, everything in this world will be a flat, mundane piece.

Created by designers Megumi Kajiwara and Tatsuhiko Niijima, Motion Silhouette is a an engrossing storybook that makes use of clever cut-out placements, lovely illustrations, and the user’s attention to light and shadows. At first glance, it seems like an ordinary book playing with cutouts. However, this type of reading material requires your imagination and movement. The story comes to life only until the reader starts to manipulate the cut-out silhouettes with a flashlight.

Ghosts appear, trains ruffle closer and trees grow taller during the interaction. Motion Silhouette is one of the handcrafted books made by Kajiwara and Niijima. Watch how it works in the video below:
